Dinosaur or ‘Dino’ kale has deep blue-grey, super-savoyed long and narrow leaves. It is a extremely winter hardy variety but can grow well in the summer in an indoor garden.
Week 1
Here we started our Dinosaur Kale in 1 inch Rockwool Cubes. The seedlings we watered with a light mixture of Pure Blend Pro Grow. Once the seedlings sprout and we see roots peaking out of the bottom of the rockwool cube it is time to plant them into the system.
We planted them into a Botanicare Turbo Garden Ebb & Flow system using 8″ Round Pots and Hydroton. We then used Advanced Nutrients SensiGrow as the fertilizer.

Week 7
Here at week 7 the Dinosaur Kale is ready to harvest. Since it is a vegetative crop, one we grow for the leaves not fruit or flowers, we will not push it into bloom. Dinosaur Kale is a tough leathery leaf so it works best in soups where is can be tenderized. Although some people like it in salads. Please feel free to post any questions on this grow journal in the comments section below.
Thanks for the post
Thank you for posting these, I’ve been obtaining good results with Advanced currently. Please post some more tips when you can.
It is really nice to see the growth progression.
Cool to see tiny seedlings turn into big mature plants!
Hi, I was wondering how many hours of light per day this kale needs. Thanks!
Hi Rick, Kale is winter crop so it used to shorter days but can handle more light. Since we grew ours indoors and the temperature was controlled we grew them with 18 hours of light a day.
